Peter & Jonathan Bateman Silver Cream Jug, 1790
£440.00
Cream Jug - Helmet-shape - London 1790 by Peter & Jonathan Bateman - 17.3cm high; 122g - DC/7092
This beautiful George III silver cream jug was made by Peter & Jonathan Bateman; the sons of Hester Bateman who were in partnership for just six months.
This good-sized, helmet-shaped pitcher stands on a square foot and is later chased with flowers and scrolls around a vacant cartouche (no erasures). The high, looped handle makes for easy use and the gilt (gold-wash) interior gives it that extra flavour of opulence.
This excellent quality cream or milk jug is in fine condition with the London hallmarks stamped to the side of the foot. The maker's mark PB/IB is much sought after and although partly mistruck is still clearly legible for the scarce partnership of Peter & Jonathan Bateman. A fine example with a rarely encountered mark from the Bateman workshop.
