Wine Label - Sherry; Gilt; Vine & Grape Drapery - London 1806 by Digby Scott & Benjamin Smith - 8.2cm wide; 7.8cm tall; 59g - DK/7025
This is a huge silver-gilt wine label dating from the George III period and made by the top silversmiths Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith.
Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith supplied the royal goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell and it is likely that this opulent label was retailed by them; large in size, hefty in weight, expansive in design and gilt all over, it is typical of the taste of their wealthy clientele.
The label is pierced for SHERRY and has a festoon of vine leaves and bunches of grapes. It is discreetly hallmarked with the DS/BS maker's mark on the leaf above the "S" and remaining marks (duty mark, lion passant and date letter "L") on the leaf above the "Y". The condition is excellent and the original gilding without wear.
