Set of 3 Incredibly Heavy Silver Wine Labels, 1810 BS/IS
£2,450.00
Wine Labels (3) - Sherry, Port & Claret; Scallop Shells - London 1810 by Benjamin & James Smith - 5.25cm wide; 5.5cm high; 150g combined weight - TN/6381a
These are an outstanding set of three George III period silver wine labels and in terms of quality are as good as it gets! There are three labels in the form of a scallop shell with the pierced names of Sherry, Port and Claret; these being the three most popular wines of the Regency period.
The labels were made by the partnership of brothers Benjamin & James Smith who were major suppliers to the royal silver and goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell. The labels were presumably originally part of a much larger suite and no doubt made for a very wealthy client. The double-link belcher chains are of incredibly thick gauge and add to the overall hefty feel of the set. These are large, cast wine labels as can be seen in the comparative photo with a standard bottle ticket of the period - look at the difference in chains!
The labels are hallmarked to the reverse side and partly pierced out by the names but still legible and identifiable throughout. Despite their 200+ year age, the condition remains superb.
