Caddy Spoon - Trifurcated; Bright-cut Engraved Handle - London circa 1780 by George Smith - 8.6cm long - HS/6202

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This stunning Georgian silver caddy spoon is a rare survivor of its type. Owing to the fragility of this type of caddy spoon few survive in a good state without repair and fortunately this example has stood the test of time in superb condition.

The spoon has a three-way join between handle and bowl ("trifurcated"). The handle is attractively engraved whilst more unusually the fluted bowl is beautifully chased to give an appealing design to the underside. Furthermore, the handle join on the underside displays an elaborate scallop which is a very rarely found design motif.  All-in-all a quite exceptional spoon!

This caddy spoon was made by George Smith prior to the addition of a duty stamp to London-made small spoons in 1781 and the style suggest a date of manufacture between 1775 and 1780.
