Nutmeg Grater - Navette-shaped, Double-hinged - London circa 1780 by James Phipps - 5.5cm x 3.3cm x 2.2cm high; 38g - RT/6654

This is a fine quality George III period, antique silver nutmeg grater made by James Phipps.

Navette-shape in form, this attractive looking spice grater has two hinges; one to reveal the rasp for grating the nutmeg and the second for retrieving the grated spice for sprinkling over hot drinks and puddings. The top cover is engraved with original ownership initials within a festoon mounted circular cartouche whilst the hinge to the underside is cleverly hidden by one of the two bars of engraving.

Both inside covers are clearly marked "IP" for the specialist smallworker James Phipps. The working period of the maker, the style of the box and the lack of a date letter and duty mark within the hallmarks help to accurately date this nutmeg grater to circa 1780. The nutmeg grater further benefits from being in excellent all round condition.
