Sold
Table Spoon - Hanoverian Rattail Pattern - Canongate circa 1730 by Peter Inglis - 20.6cm long; 69g - EC/7740
One rarely encounters early 18thC Rattail spoons from the Scottish provinces and this a first rate example from Canongate with super-clear hallmarks.
This high quality silver table spoon has a distinct ridge down the front of the stem and a bold rattail to the reverse of the bowl. It bears three rows of engraving to the reverse terminal that are by the same hand and may point to the shared surname, first names and former surnames of newly weds.
The marks are fantastic and show: "PI" maker's mark for Peter Inglis (x2), Stag's head erased and "L". Peter Inglis worked in Canongate from circa 1715. The condition is excellent too with a lovely antique patina. Mentioned for thoroughness - you can just feel a very slight bruise to the left-hand side of the bowl.
Canongate was a distinct royal burgh on the fringes of Edinburgh until the mid-19th century.
