Huge 15.5" Scottish Silver Hash Spoon, Aberdeen c.1740
£1,350.00
Hash Spoon - Hanoverian - Aberdeen circa 1740 by Alexander Forbes - 39.2cm long; 213g - SW/7441
This is an extremely rare and magnificent Scottish provincial silver hash spoon made in Aberdeen by Alexander Forbes.
Measuring a massive 39cm long, this size of spoon is a rarity with a London or Edinburgh hallmark and so to find one from the Scottish provinces is quite a coup. It's size can be seen in the comprasion image where it lies adjacent to a standard table spoon.
The spoon is in the Hanoverian pattern that was prevalent through the mid-18th century and has an unusual heel/mini-rattail to the reverse of the bowl. The condition is excellent although the rim of the bowl is thinning and the reverse of the terminal is engraved with an initial "L". The four marks include two "AF" maker's mark stamps for Alexander Forbes of Aberdeen who was working between 1728 and 1753.
