George I Silver Rattail Table Spoon, 1716 Nathaniel Roe
£225.00
Table Spoon - Hanoverian Rattail Pattern - London 1716 by Nathaniel Roe - 19.9cm long; 50g - CA/7620
This is a fine specimen of a George I period silver table spoon made from the purer Britannia standard silver.
It is an early example of the Hanoverian Rattail and features the expected traits of this pattern. There is an original engraved betrothal triangle to the reverse terminal with the upper "O" denoting the surname of the happy couple and the "T" and "F" their first names. The Britannia standard marks can be read as: "Ro" maker's mark, lion's head erased (for London), figure of Britannia (95.8% silver purity) and date letter "A" for 1716. The spoon is in fine condition with an antique patina.
Nathaniel Roe was apprenticed to the specialist spoonmaker William Scarlett in 1702 and had a distinctive New Standard maker's mark featuring "Ro" with a stag's head above.
