Spoon - Maidenhead - Lichfield c.1590 by John Gladwin and John Utting - 161mm long; 30g - DD/2280

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a very rare example of a provincial Maidenhead spoon in great original condition and dating from the late Elizabethan period. The maker's mark "G" over "IV" Is clearly struck to the inside of the bowl for John Gladwin and John Utting who worked from the Midlands city of Lichfield during the late Elizabethan period. The terminal has a typically crude representation of the virgin Mary and was a feminist alternative to the more imposing apostle spoons of the period. The spoon is in excellent original condition with the fig-shape bowl retaining both full size and shape.

Purely by coincidence, we currently have a seal top spoon in stock by the same maker.
