Elizabeth I Seal Top Spoon, 1602

This excellent William Cawdell spoon dates from the end of the Tudor period and is a typical example of a seal top spoon being made at the start of the 17th century. It has a cast seal with most of the original mercury gilding intact on a hexagonal stem and with "GR" ownership initials dot-pricked to the flat plate. The spoon has a really good, chunky feel to it, the condition is excellent with a very good, unworn fig-shaped bowl and a clear set of hallmarks. A very fine example!

William Cawdell was the most prolific specialist spoonmaker of the period and pivotal within the main dynasty of master/apprentice spoonmakers.
