Dog Nose Basting Spoon, 1707

This is a fabulous and rare example of a 12.5" long silver basting spoon dating from the Queen Anne period. It is a truly impressive spoon with a generously sized bowl and original (or perhaps a decade or two later) engraved betrothal initials "C" over "WE" within swirling flourishes to the front terminal. the style of these initials suggest this large spoon was given as a wedding gift and the surname of the happy couple began with a "C" and the lower letters being their first name initials.

This basting spoon (also known as a gravy or stuffing spoon) is in excellent condition with a very good unworn bowl and a legible set of Britannia Standard hallmarks to the reverse shank (the date letter is part worn but can easily be seen to be that for 1707) for the specialist spoonmaker, Andrew Archer.
