Shell Mounted Caddy Spoon by ML

Caddy Spoon - Shell Mounted - Birmingham c.1805 by Matthew Linwood - 8.3cm; 16g - LO/1507
This is a first rate example of a rare shell mounted, Georgian silver caddy spoon.
Made by Matthew Linwood, one of the main protagonists of this form, the shell aperture forms the bowl of the spoon. It is firmly mounted with a silver rim and has a bifurcated fiddle & thread style handle. The back of the handle bears the single "ML" maker's mark and the spoon dates from the first decade of the 19th century.
The few examples of shell mounted caddy spoons that survive are often blighted by cracks or chips, however this is a really fine example in excellent condition.
