Caddy Spoon - Old English Pattern - Aberdeen circa 1825 by William Whitecross - 8.5cm long; 10g - DC/7192

Made in Aberdeen by William Whitecross, this good-looking Scottish provincial silver caddy spoon is clearly stamped and in fine condition.

The caddy spoon has an elegant shape with fluted bowl and benefits from having no personal engravings. The reverse side is marked "W.W" for William Whitecross and "A", "B", "D" and "N" for Aberdeen.

William Whitecross was apprenticed from 1800 to James Erskine the most prolific Aberdeen maker of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and likely continued in the workshop as foreman until Erskine's retirment circa 1820. He was admitted as a member of the Hammermen in 1824 and William Whitecross & Co. was established in Union Street, Aberdeen in the same year. The shop was further along the same street in 1840 and was likely closed down soon after.
