Britannia Standard Rattail Table Spoon, 1714

Dating from the first year of George I's reign and hence the Georgian period, this good quality table spoon is in the Hanoverian Rattail pattern which would have been at the cutting edge of fashion in 1714 just as the popularity for the earlier Dog Nose pattern was beginning to wane.

This spoon has a satisfying weight and benefits from being in fine condition with a lovely original patina. Unusually, it has two sets of engraved betrothal initials to the reverse terminal with both triangles topped by a "H" (for the surname) suggesting the spoon was passed down by parents for their son's wedding. This fine spoon has a good, legible set of Britannia Standard silver hallmarks, including the distinctive "Sp" maker's mark for Thomas Spackman.
