Queen Anne Trefid Silver Dessert Spoon, London 1704
Sold
Dessert Spoon - Trefid - London 1704 by William Scarlett - 14.2cm long; 24g - RW/3121
This is a rare example of a Queen Anne period silver dessert spoon in the trefid pattern.
Measuring 5.6" long, this dessert spoon was made in the purer Britannia standard silver by the top specialist spoonmaker William Scarlett and is clearly struck three times with "SC" maker's mark, Britannia figure and date letter for 1704 (it is not unusual at this date for smaller spoons to lack the town mark - in fact the date letter is a bonus!).
The rattail to the reverse of the bowl is heightened by an outer line that was part of the manufacture and the reverse terminal is engraved with a betrothal triangle "W" (surname) over "T*S" (first names).
Small spoons from this period are much scarcer than table spoons and rarely survive in good condition, but this spoon is in fine order with a good, unworn bowl and antique patina.
