Caudle Cup or Porringer - 2-handled, Circular with Chased Decoration - London 1703 by Matthew Madden - 8cm diameter (13cm wide incl. handles); 6.2cm high; 85g - CS/4037

This is a fine example of a Queen Anne period child's silver caudle cup or porringer made in London by Matthew Madden. This form of cup was generally used for feeding small children and were often given as christening gifts.

The porringer takes the standard circular form with two side handles, a rope band around the middle and fluting towards the base. Unusually and as a bonus, there are no personal engravings (nor erasures) and the overall condition of this 320-year piece of antique silver is excellent with neither damage nor repair.

This cup is made from the purer Britannia standard silver and bears a good, full set of hallmarks adjacent to the handle that includes the MA maker's mark for the largeworker Matthew Madden.
