Pair Irish Silver Cups, Dublin City Marshall 1776
Sold
Cups (pair) - 2-handled - Dublin c.1776 by Richard Tudor (retailed by Matthew West) - 15cm high; 865g combined weight - SD/7029
This is a handsome pair of 18th century Irish silver cups both identically engraved with a presentation inscription to the incumbent Marshall at the time of the city of Dublin.
The cups are a good size and weight with two scroll capped handles. The fronts are beautifully engraved with a floral festoon above a wolf crest and the motto "Aetas Non Viduitas Uxoribus". To the reverse side, both cups are skillfully engraved with the following inscription:
"Presented
by the
Select Trinity Company
to their worthy member
William Osbrey
Marshall of the City of Dublin
in acknowledgment of his
ingenuity in devising
prudence in proposing
diligence in promoting
their
New Charter Party
dated
the first day of February
MDCCLXXVI"
William Osbrey was the Marshall of Dublin for thirty nine years from 1772 to 1811. The date in Roman numerals within the inscription is for the year 1776.
These interesting and historically important cups are in fine condition throughout with neither damage nor repair and a good, antique patina. They are both marked with Dublin hallmarks for the 1770's and stamped with R.T and MW maker's mark - the former for Richard Tudor and most likely the actual maker and the latter for Matthew West acting as retailer.
A fine pair of Irish silver cups.
