Two-handled Irish Silver Cup, c.1770 Wm Townsend
£1,600.00
Cup (two-handled) - Dublin circa 1770 by William Townsend - 19.5cm high x 28cm wide; 15cm diameter; 1228g - MV/6404
This is a large and heavy mid-18th century Irish silver cup complete with engraved armorial.
The quality is simply superb with a very satisfying feel when lifted. This 2-handled cup has an urn-shaped body with central girdle. The crisply engraved coat of arms features three wolf heads with a wolf head crest and the motto "Sine Tremora" which translates to "Without Fear".
The cup was made in Dublin by William Townsend circa 1770 - in line with much mid-18th century Irish silver, this cup lacks a date letter but with patience the exact date can be ascertained by comparing the crowned harp and Hibernia marks to assay records as they were changed each year, those on this cup seem to align with the 1770 period.
This high quality antique cup remains in excellent condition with neither damage nor repair.
