Newcastle Silver Dessert Spoon, 1784
£88.00
Dessert Spoon - Old English with Shoulders - Newcastle 1784 by John Langlands & John Robertson - 18.5cm long; 33g - SK/3654a
This is an excellent Newcastle marked silver dessert spoon in an unusual pattern with documentary hallmarks.
The flatware pattern is Old English with Shoulders which had a brief spell of popularity in London during the 1770's and this being a provincially made spoon is a little later. The large Newcastle hallmarks are for 1784 and must have been stamped in the first part of the date letter year (May-May) as the duty mark, which was introduced in December 1784, is not present.
The firm of Langlands & Robertson were the major silver producers in Newcastle during the second half of the 18th century. This spoon is in excellent condition with an original, expertly engraved letter "F" in block script to the front.
