Soup Tureen - Oval Bellied Form with Lift-off Cover - London 1819 by Robert Hennell - 42cm long (inc. handles); 3630grams - WK/4770

This is a breath-taking Georgian silver soup tureen - it is large and heavy, superbly made with outstanding decoration and in fabulous condition too.

The tureen takes an oval bellied form with a rose and gadroon mount around the top rim. There are two wonderful foliate decorated carrying handles terminating in beautifully modelled roses and a further flower decorated looped handle with central rose for the cover that sits on a bed of chased acanthus leaves. The whole stands on four superb, cast, rose-capped feet that shout the high Regency period in which the tureen was made.

A piece of this high quality has to have been made in one of the best silversmiths workshops and indeed this tureen was created in the workshops of Robert Hennell. It has a really satisfying weight of 3.6kg or 117 troy ounces.

The condition is incredible with nothing negative to report and an excellent all over antique patina. An utterly exquisite piece of George III silverware!
