Irish Silver Bowl with Rural Scenes, 1918
£550.00
Bowl - Farmyard Scenes - Dublin 1918 by West & Son - 14cm diameter; 7.2cm high; 187g - SO/7947
This is a fabulous quality Irish silver bowl dating from a turbulent period in Irish history.
Chased with a calm pastoral scene, it is the antithesis of the political rumblings in Ireland at the time. Following the Easter Risings of 1916 and the subsequent rise of Republicanism, a general election was held in 1918 that ultimately lead to the declaration of Irish independence.
This bowl is a faithful replica of the charming "rustic" Irish bowls of the second half of the 18th century. It is however superior in quality to the earlier light-weight examples as this bowl has a good hefty weight of 6 tr.oz and a lovely feeling in the hand. It stands on three hoof feet and features a farmer with stick and his wife churning milk adjacent to their house and has a vacant shield-shaped cartouche with doves either side.
Made by the premier Dublin retailers West & Son, this excellent quality silver bowl remains in first class condition.
