Irish Silver Pyx, 1876 Samuel le Bas

This is an excellent quality Irish silver pyx contained within its original pouch.

A pyx or pix is a small round container used by the Catholic church to carry the Eucharist to people who are unable to attend mass. This example is beautifully engraved to the top with the "IHS" Christogram. The tightly fitting, pull-off top can be opened to reveal a lovely gilt interior.

Bearing a full set of Dublin hallmarks to the underside (part marks inside the cover), this pyx can be seen to have been made by the top silversmith Samuel le Bas and presumably the name "Donegan" were the retailers. It is in excellent condition.
