Stonehaven Silver Teaspoon by Alex Glenny
£2,200.00
Teaspoon - Fiddle Pattern - Stonehaven circa 1840 by Alexander Glenny - 14cm long; 13g - JG/5650
This extremely rare silver teaspoon bears Stonehaven marks that are considered the holy grail for Scottish Provincial silver collectors!
The reverse of the fiddle pattern terminal is clearly struck "A.G" for the maker Alexander Glenny and individual punches for "S" "T" "O" "N" "H" and "N". The spoon itself is in fine condition with original script "WSD" initials to the front terminal.
Only a handful of confidently ascribed Stonehaven spoons (i.e. with the marks described above) are known and as such must be considered the rarest of all Scottish provincial marks. All examples have been teaspoons. The few previous examples that have appeared at auction in the last twenty years have all made strong four figure sums with an amazing £3800 + buyer's premium (£4750 all in) for a teaspoon from the same original set and identical to the one we are offering that was sold at Woolley & Walllis in January 2009. Another similar teaspoon made £3600 + buyer's premium at Lyon & Turnbull in February 2008.
