Salt Pot - Rectangular on 4 Feet; Gilt Interior - York 1817 by James Barber & William Whitwell - 10.6cm long x 7cm wide x 5.5cm high; 129g - JQ/6521

This is a very rare opportunity to purchase a York-made silver open salt pot.

This good-sized, rectangular salt cellar was made by the partnership of Barber & Whitwell and bears York assay office marks for 1817. It is an extremely well-made piece with a nice solid weight in the hand. The high quality can be seen in the maiden mask surmount to the hoof feet, cherub masks to top rim and the original lemon gilding to the interior to prevent corrosion from salt. A great attention to detail is the additional gilding to the top rim to protect from salt spillage and a discreet dolphin crest has been engraved above the fluting on one side.

This is a fine quality George III silver salt pot in excellent condition with the bonus of York hallmarks.
