Medicine Spoon - Gibson patent - London 1828 by Charles Gibson - 13.5cm long; 42g - WH/5337

This is an early example of a rare Gibson's Patent antique silver medicine spoon.

This Georgian spoon has a hollow handle to allow the user to control the quantity of medicine administered by placing a finger over the aperture. To the top of the bowl is an opening for loading the spoon that is then closed tightly over with a flush, hinged cover and the interior is gilt.

This type of spoon was invented in 1827 and is engraved "C Gibson Inventor 1 Bishopsgate St Within" to the collar of the handle. A full set of clear hallmarks are located inside the bowl with the maker's mark of the inventor and part marks can be found inside the hinged cover.  The spoon is in fine condition and an excellent example of a much sought after spoon.

A Gibson Patent spoon is illustrated and discussed in "Silver Flatware" by Ian Pickford on page 208 figure 379.
