Sweet Basket - Pedestal foot; bright-cut engraved - London 1786 by Andrew Fogelberg & Stephen Gilbert - 16cm x 17cm high; 245g - YB/3079

This is a beautiful George III silver sweet or sugar basket made by the important silversmithing partnership of Fogelberg and Gilbert.

The vase-shaped basket stands on a pedestal foot, with a hinged swing handle and has a gilt (gold-washed) interior. The outside is beautifully engraved with a floral band around the top rim and a cartouche to both sides with an engraved crest of a unicorn to one and a swan atop a trumpet to the other.

The basket has a lovely feel in the hand and is in excellent condition (some scratching to the internal gilding) with a full set of London hallmarks to the underside.

Andrew Fogelberg and Stephen Gilbert were an important partnership with the former being the master to a young Paul Storr from 1785 - this dish made the following year! Stephen Gilbert undertook his apprenticeship with Edward Wakelin who was one half of the partnership that produced fine quality, by-appointment silver for the royal family.
