George III Silver Kitchen Nutmeg Grater, 1804 TP/ER
Sold
Kitchen Nutmeg Grater - London 1804 by Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson - 11.1cm x 5.7cm; 105g - EV/3714
This is a fine example of a large, George III period silver nutmeg grater in the open-fronted "kitchen" style and made by the top silversmithing partnership of Phipps & Robinson.
The silver frame holds a demi-lune steel rasp pierced with an attractive pattern of holes in concentric circles. The frame and handle have a reeded design with a plain, hinged flap to one end; the grated spice is stored in this section when closed and can be retrieved by opening. The back of the grater is plain and engraved with a crest and motto - "IN BELLO QUIES" (calm in action).
The full set of hallmarks are located behind the rasp inside the grater - we have carefully taken out the rasp to read and photograph. Appropriate part mark can be found on the hinged flap. This good-sized Georgian piece is in excellent antique and practical condition.
