George II Silver Bun-shaped Sugar Castor, 1737 Samuel Wood
£550.00
Sugar Castor - Bun-shaped - London 1737 by Samuel Wood - 13.4cm high; 177g - YK/5534
So called, "bun-shaped" silver castors with domed covers are generally of pepperette or muffineer size, however this is an unusually large example that was made as a sugar dredger.
This George II castor is a very fine quality piece with a good hefty weight as one might expect from the maker Samuel Wood who was a specialist castor-maker.
It is in excellent, original condition with a fine patina. The full set of hallmarks are located to the underside of the foot and a matching lion passant is stamped to the inside of the pierced cover. An excellent piece of early Georgian silver!
