Strawberry Dish - London 1722 - 28.5cm (11") diameter; 735g - TR/3991

This is a fine, large example of a rare George I period silver strawberry dish.

At 11" in diameter, this is bigger than most dishes of this ilk and with the good gauge of silver it has a commensurately heavy weight. The edges are filled in typical strawberry dish style and there is an original engraved coat of arms to the centre. The hallmarks are located to the edge and although a touch worn, the date letter "G" for 1722 is easily read and the distinctive top of the maker's mark can be discerned and could be identified with patience.

So called strawberry dishes were probably originally intended for displaying summer fruit at the dinner table, but these days are very popular due to their versatility as they can be equally well used for many other purposes.
