Faun Hauling a Lion & Goat Caddy Spoon, 1859
Sold
Caddy Spoon - Faun - London 1859 by George Richard Elkington - 11cm long; 50g - DR/2500
What an unusual silver caddy spoon!
The gilded bowl of this caddy spoon has a faun (half human-half goat) crouching at one end and hauling behind him a double-scroll containing both a lion and a goat's head. The faun is complete with appropriate facial expression. We are sure there must be some symbolism, but have not managed to work it out!
The handle of this high quality, Victorian spoon is cast giving the spoon a good, hefty feel in the hand, plus the bowl has been expertly made with chased flutes. This rare spoon remains in excellent condition.
