Charles II Silver Alms Plate by St. John Hoyte
£1,295.00
Alms Plate - Plain, Circular - London circa 1680 by St. John Hoyte - 17.4cm diameter; 170g - WP/6558
This is a rare Charles II period silver alms plate bearing the mark of St John Hoyte.
Measuring just under 7" in diameter, this plain dish would have been used for collecting alms or monetary offering in church. The plate is not punched with a full set of London hallmarks (and priced accordingly) but is clearly stamped with the linked SH maker's mark within a dotted circle in a circular shield (see Mitchell pages 489-490).
St John Hoyte gained his freedom in 1676 after his seven year apprenticeship with Thomas King. In this time, he bound six apprentices before dying at a relatively young age in 1693.
This silver plate is in fine condition (a little up and down to the rim) and has a good colour.
