William III Silver Tazza, 1700 Denny & Bache
£2,250.00
Tazza - Circular with Gadroon Rim - London 1700 by William Denny & John Bache - 19.5cm diameter; 6.5cm high; 300g - ED/5565
This is a fine example of a William III period silver tazza or footed waiter with clear Britannia standard hallmarks.
The circular tazza has a gadroon rim and stands on a trumpet-shaped foot. It bears an original engraved betrothal triangle to the underside "H" over "IC" and also a later presentation inscription: "The Radcliffe Infirmary from the Rev'd Thomas Briscoe B.D. Fellow of Jesus College 1856". The condition is excellent with neither damage nor repair and a lovely antique patina.
The tazza was made by the London partnership of William Denny & John Bache at the turn of the 17th to 18th century who had both been apprenticed to William Harrison and began working together in 1697.
The Radcliffe Infirmary was an Oxford hospital famed for being the first to use penicillin on patients. The hospital opened in 1770 and finally closed for medical use in 2007.
Thomas Briscoe was a Welsh priest and scholar who translated the New Testament and some books of the Old Testament in to the Welsh language. He has his own Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Briscoe
