Wine Coaster - Pierced - London 1805 by Peter, Ann & William Bateman - 11.8cm diameter; 3.9cm high; 173g gross weight - TG/4911

This is a lovely George III silver wine coaster made by the famous Bateman family of silversmiths.

This wine coaster is wide enough for bottles and standard wine decanters and the wooden base with green baize will prevent scuffing to the dining table or sideboard. The silver gallery is attractively pierced with trellis work and delicate engraving between and is mounted with a beaded rim. The wooden base has turned concentric circles within it to prevent a vacuum forming within the punt of the bottle.

The coaster is in fine condition with neither damage nor repair to the silver, although the top surface of the wooden base has been scuffed and lost most of its varnish.

This coaster is one of two identical examples currently being offered and although made twenty seven years apart would make a fine pair - see photo link below for the 1778 example.
