Wine Coaster - Pierced - London 1778 by William Skeen - 11.9cm diameter; 3.9cm high; 147g gross weight - FJ/4912

This is an excellent antique silver wine coaster made in 1778 by William Skeen.

The silver gallery of this coaster is mounted with beading and attractively decorated with pierced trellis sections and delicate engraving between each section. The wooden base has turned concentric circles within it to prevent a vacuum forming within the punt of the bottle and the green baize to the underside will avert scratching to furniture.

This wine coaster has a diameter to allow for bottles and standard wine decanters and is in fine condition. The London hallmarks are located in typical fashion for coasters on the edge of the rim - wine coaster hallmarks are never clear but these are at least legible.

This coaster is one of two identical examples currently being offered and although made twenty seven years apart would make a fine pair - see photo link below for the 1805 example.
