The Service
We are pleased to be offering a rare opportunity to own a boxed silver canteen in the 17th Century Trefid pattern. This service provides for seven pieces per 12 place settings with additional serving items.
The service is housed in a 1970’s wooden box with most of the silver hallmarked London 1898 by R & W Sorley. The dessert forks are hallmarked London 1917 and the teaspoons are London 1955/65.
We have not previously encountered trefid handled silver knives, so the 24 knives in this set may well have been especially commissioned. The handles are all hallmarked London 1954 by Hardy Brothers and are fitted with stainless steel blades.
Each piece benefits from being in excellent polished condition with no personalised engravings.
Trefid Pattern
Trefid pattern was the first true English flatware pattern and was produced at the beginning of the reign of Charles I. It was first in fashion between 1660 and 1700 and has a cut-out trefoil terminal to the handle. The forks in this service remain true to their earlier counterparts in having three tines.
