The Service

We are pleased to be offering a beautifully presented Victorian period silver 12 place settings canteen of cutlery in Old English Pattern contained within its original box. The service provides for five pieces per 12 place settings with additional serving items.

This is a straight canteen with all pieces made in London 1893 by John Aldwinckle & Thomas Slater. Each piece has a good hefty weight and the service is of the highest quality one would expect from a hand-wrought London-made service. It also has the major bonus of being in superb, polished condition with no personalised engravings.

Aldwinckle & Slater were one of the premier specialist silver flatware makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and any silver flatware bearing their mark will be of the finest quality. The service is contained within a beautiful wooden box with the inked label on the blue baize inside the lid showing the name of the original retailer: Watherston & Son of 12 Pall Mall East, London.

The canteen benefits from the presence of 12 oval-bowled soup spoons which are a scarce in-between size between the standard table and dessert spoons. These were the standard spoons prior to the introduction of the round bowled variety in the early 20th century. The teaspoons are a good size allowing them to be alternatively used for small puddings and desserts, for example crème brulee.

There are 18 table forks which allow great flexibility should forks be required for a starter or fish course. This canteen is supplied without knives, but we can provide appropriate complementary knives on request.

Old English Pattern

Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and has always been a very favoured pattern due to its elegant and simple form. It has been produced continually to the present day with a resurgence of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

This canteen is supplied within its original wooden box. It is an excellent quality box with dovetail joints and brass fittings for carrying and extra strength. It is lined with blue baize and each piece slots nicely in to place. There is no key to ensure a tight a closure, but making one would be a straight forward job for a locksmith if required.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
