349 piece Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1979 by Roberts & Dore

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a very extensive silver double-canteen in Hanoverian Rattail Pattern. The service provides for fourteen dining pieces for up to 24 people.

All the pieces (except one well-matched replacement dessert fork) are hallmarked for Sheffield 1979 and marked with the sponsor’s mark of Roberts & Dore

The number and range of items in this service should mean that there is never a time when appropriate dining cutlery is missing! For example, there are twenty eight table spoons of which any number could be used for serving purposes, with the flexibility to use them as dining items if required. The butter knives are a useful and unusual addition to this service and provide individual side knives, plus a slightly longer extra four should they be required for pate, conserves and other spreads. All potential courses are catered for.

In the standard manner, the table and dessert knives, plus the fruit knives and forks, are fitted with stainless steel blades/tines and silver Hanoverian pattern handles.

Each piece benefits from being in excellent near mint condition with a good solid weight. This is a fabulous quality service.

Hanoverian Rattail Pattern

Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1880’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens in combination with pistol-grip knives. Due to its elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of the spoons and forks has the distinctive Hanoverian central ridge and the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowls. The knives have traditional pistol-shaped silver handles.
