342 Piece QUEEN'S PATTERN CANTEEN of SILVER CUTLERY,

Sheffield 1967/69 by Roberts & Belk

The Service

This is a magnificent, extensive silver canteen of cutlery in the highly sought after Queen’s Pattern that provides a wide range of dining pieces for up to 24 place settings and a good array of serving pieces.

All the flatware was made at the Roberts & Belk Furnival Works in Sheffield and has double-struck decoration in high relief. This is a straight service with all pieces being hallmarked for Sheffield between 1967 and 1969. The stainless steel blades are engraved with the maker’s name and address.

There are many positives to this service: top quality, mint condition, desirable pattern, inexpensive price (less than £50/piece!) and the range of pieces available which provides a huge amount of flexibility.

The majority of dining pieces are in quantities of 24 place settings – except for the 36 dessert forks - an extra dozen of this sized fork could be very useful (e.g. for children or starter courses) and some of the occasional use items which are in 12’s.

Serving is amply catered for with a dozen table spoons fulfilling most needs. The large soup ladle is magnificent and the pair of salad servers and fish servers being equally splendid. The carving set has both poultry and meat sized knife and fork combinations and the sharpening steel is a useful addition.

The service is of the highest quality with pieces having a nice sturdy feel in the hand. The overall weight is quite staggering and the listed weight below does not even include any of the knives, fruit forks and carvers which have stainless steel blades.

Queen's Pattern

Queen’s Pattern was first in fashion in the 1820’s and has similarities in shape to King’s Pattern, but with more ornate decoration and an anthemion motif to the reverse of the bowls. It was named in honour of Queen Caroline of Brunswick (King George IV’s wife). The highly ornate decoration found on Queen’s Pattern demands that each piece is made with a thick gauge of silver and thus makes it one of the most prestigious of all flatware patterns.

The whole service has been professionally cleaned and polished and is near mint condition. The bowls are unworn and the tines are full and equal in length. The double struck decoration remains crisp and there are no personalised engravings.
