Spoon - Trefid; Beaded Rattail - London 1700 by William Matthew - 19.5cm long; 49g - LP/6499

This is an excellent silver trefid spoon dating from the first year of the 18th century with a clear set of hallmarks.

The spoon is in the standard trefid form with the addition of beading down the centre of the rattail to the reverse of the bowl. The reverse terminal is engraved with an unusual betrothal triangle in script form. The spoon is in excellent condition.

The reverse side is struck with an excellent set of Britannia standard London hallmarks that includes a clear date letter for 1700 and MA maker's mark for the specialist spoonmaker William Matthew. Matthew had gained his apprenticeship from John Smith in 1675 and went on to train Stephen Coleman and William Petley.
