Soup Tureen - Vase-shaped with Applied Festoons - London 1877 by FB Thomas & Co. - 35cm long; 19.5cm wide; 25.5cm high; 1685g - CN/3402

This is a fabulous Victorian silver soup tureen of the highest quality with a superb neoclassical appearance.

Retailed by the New Bond Street, London retailers of Thomas & Company, this large two-handled soup tureen is adorned with applied festoons featuring floral swags, ribbons and medallions. It stands on an oval, pedestal foot and is mounted with a fine bead wire. The lift-off cover is fitted with a serpent handle which reflects the reeding within the side-handles. Both the main body and the cover are engraved twice with a stork crest.

The tureen was made by the premier silversmiths Martin & Hall and whilst their maker's mark is clear to the cover, interestingly the one stamped to the body has been over-struck by the retailer's mark, clearly showing the supply line of this tureen.

The quality of this Victorian soup tureen is of the highest calibre with the gauge of silver giving it a good, hefty weight and both the design and application of the decoration expertly performed. The condition is excellent throughout.
