Silver Spectacles Case with Spectacles - Navette-shape; Bright-cut Engraved - London 1784 by William Birch - 12cm long; 117g gross weight - VN/5338
A spectacular silver spectacles case complete with spectacles!
This is a very rare and beautiful example of a George III period fitted silver specacles case. The exterior is superbly engraved to both top and underside with bright-cut engraving and centred by an original coat-of-arms surmounted by a galleon ship crest and above the family motto: "Just in Time" - unusually the armorial features on both sides of the box and suggests expense was not a concern to the original owner.
The interior of the box maintains its original red felt lining that accommodates a pair of silver spectacles. The specacles are complete and in good condition throughout. They are appropriately marked to the double-hinged arms and the bridge with London hallmarks for 1793 and the name of the retailer "Wells". The glasses appear to have been made to match the box as they are a perfect fit. It is quite remarkable that the case and specacles have managed to stay together for 230+ years.
The full set of London hallmarks stamped to the box are hidden beneath the lining and as shown in the images, we have carefully lifted the lining to reveal and photograph them. The condition is fantastic with crisp engraving and nothing negative to report.
