Beakers - Barrel-shaped, Hob 'n' Nob London 1770 by Samuel Meriton - 17.2cm combined height (8.7cm high each beaker); 337g combined weight - YT/5843
This is an outstanding Georgian pair of silver beakers that fit together to form a barrel.
Made by Samuel Meriton, this hefty barrel-shaped vessel breaks in two at the centre to form two separate beakers. This type of piece is often referred to as "hob 'n' nob beakers" and were generally made in the final decades of the 18th century. As well as forming a tight fitting barrel, these cups can also stack together.
The interiors of the beakers retain their original gilt finish and the exteriors bear engraved crests of a stylised fish. The bases of both cups are stamped with full sets of London hallmarks for 1770.
This is a top quality example of this scarce drinking novelty vessel with the further benefit of being in superb condition with an original antique patina.
