This is a fabulous silver vinaigrette exemplifying the art of box making.

Nathaniel Mills was "best in class" as far as 19th century silver box-making was concerned and this is an exquisite example in silver-gilt. The vinaigrette is quite large in size, has a lovely wavy edged form and a superb hinge. Both the upper and lower surfaces are beautifully engraved with floral scrolls and the top has an applied sexafoil gold plaque that was intended to bear a monogram, but remains free from engraving.

Inside the box is a stunning hinged grille with pierced and engraved flower heads and leafy scrolls. The grille originally kept in place a sponge soaked in a pleasant perfume so that the owner could disguise the unpleasant odours that were rife in Victorian city streets.

This is a superb silver-gilt vinaigrette in fabulous condition and bearing clear Nathaniel Mills maker marks to both the inside lid and base.
