Candlesticks (4) - Shell-cornered Square Base - London 1752-54 by John Cafe - FN/6548

This is a superb quality set of mid-18th century cast silver candlesticks by the pre-eminent specialist maker of the period, John Cafe.

Finding straight sets of four Georgian candlesticks can be tricky and this is a stunning set with the same coat-of-arms engraved to the bases of each giving them that extra touch of class. Each is fitted with a removable sconce nozzle to aid the easy cleaning of spent wax. The London hallmarks are located to the undersides and include the Gothic script IC mark of the maker. All four are in excellent original condition.

John Cafe was apprenticed in 1730 to the candlestick maker James Gould and in turn became the most important specialist maker of the George II period. His business was continued by his younger brother William following his death in 1757.
