Salt Spoons (4) - Bright-cut engraved - London circa 1780 by George Smith - 10.3cm long; 38g combined weight - YR/2558

These are an attractive set of four Georgian silver salt spoons made by the spoonmaker George Smith.

Finding sets of four salt spoons from this period is tricky and these are a nice set in good condition. Each spoon is bright-cut engraved to the front of the stem with a crest to the terminal and stamped twice with the "GS in script maker's mark to the reverse. These marks suggest duty dodger marks to imitate the standard two marks on small spoons at this period. The lack of a duty mark and date letter place these spoons to 1780 or earlier (date letters first added in 1781) and the style of decoration suggest later than 1775.
