Sandylands Drinkwater Silver MADEIRA Label, c.1758

This is an excellent silver wine label made by the wonderfully named Sandylands Drinkwater who was one of the very earliest makers of silver bottle tickets.

This Georgian silver Madeira label is rectangular in form and has a bold, flat-chased gadroon border. It bears the "SD" crowned mark of the maker in combination with the post-1755 lion passant mark and will pre-date Drinkwater's retirement in 1760. This form of label was likely invented by Sandilands Drinkwater and is one of his latest designs, however it is more commonly found with the mark of his apprentice Richard Binley and his widow Margaret Binley and made during the 1760's.
