Robert Gray Caddy Spoon, 1815

Caddy Spoon - Scottish Bastard King's Pattern - Edinburgh circa 1815 by Robert Gray & Son - 9.2cm long; 17g - MC/9941
The Glasgow silversmith Robert Gray has often been referred to as "The Paul Storr of the North", an accolade richly deserved and this Scottish silver caddy spoon is a fine example of his work. The spoon bears a clear set of Edinburgh hallmarks as it was made prior to the opening of the Glasgow Assay Office in 1819 - Robert Gray being the main proponent of the scheme. Small Edinburgh marked silver of the period did not require a date letter, but from the style of the spoon it will date to circa 1815 and obviously prior to 1819.
This lovely caddy spoon has a Scottish form of the King's Pattern that was designed by Gray and often called "Scottish Bastard King's" as it is decorated only to the front side. The decoration remains super-crisp. The bowl has been thoughtfully made as well and has a crimped edge to the waisted section. A very pleasing spoon in fine condition.
