Reversible Silver Marrow Spoon, 1714 Wm Scarlett

Marrow Spoon - Hanoverian Rattail with Reversible Scoop - London 1714 by William Scarlett - 21cm long; 48g - YM/3389
This is an extremely rare version of a silver marrow spoon dating from the early 18th century.
The spoon takes the usual form in having a narrow scoop at one end and a standard spoon bowl at the other end of a central shank, however the unusual feature is the scoop is turned around to face the other way - generally the spoon and scoop both face upwards.
Made towards the end of Queen Anne's reign, this marrow scoop has Britannia standard hallmarks denoting the higher 95.8% purity (as opposed to 92.5% for Sterling standard) and include the "Sc" maker's mark for the specialist spoonmaker William Scarlett. Within the hallmarks is an original engraved "PB" monogram for the owner. The reverse side of the bowls portrays a prominent rattail and this spoon is an early example of Hanoverian Rattail pattern.
This excellent spoon remains in fine condition with an unworn bowl.
