Rare Silver Leaf Caddy Spoon, 1815 Wintle
Sold
Caddy Spoon - Leaf - London circa 1815 by James Wintle - 8cm long; 21g - AR/2273
This is a very rare and beautiful form of Georgian silver caddy spoon in the form of a leaf.
The majority of leaf caddy spoons were stamped from thin sheet silver and fitted with wire tendril handles, however the elegantly shaped bowl of this example has been hand-raised from a good gauge of silver and has a cast loop handle with a textured finish, plus the stump of another twig acting as thumb-piece. Altogether a much higher quality form of leaf with a heavier, more solid feel in the hand.
An indication of the high quality are the two sets of engraving; one script "RA" initials with additional flourishes and the other an enigmatic mirrored cipher. We have previously encountered two other examples of this form of spoon by the James Wintle and all three have been part marked with no year letter, however a likely date of manufacture would be circa 1815.
The spoon is in superb condition and is a fine example.
