The Service

This is a comprehensive late Victorian silver 6 place settings canteen in Queen’s Pattern. The service provides for eight pieces per 6 place settings.

All the spoons and forks were hand-wrought in the traditional manner in one of London’s premier workshops. Each piece bears an engraved crest of a ram's head - a number of them also bear a motto (see photos).

The 18 knives are modern accompaniments because antique knives rarely survive in practicable condition. As part of this service, there is a set of 6 Queen’s Pattern steak knives which are a rare occurrence. All these knives are fitted with stainless steel blades and are hallmarked Sheffield 1971 by Roberts & Belk.

A further benefit to this service is the presence of the 6 round bowled soup spoons. These again are a rare find and are also marked for Sheffield 1971 by Roberts & Belk.

Queen's Pattern

Queen’s Pattern was first in fashion in the 1820’s and was named in honour of Queen Caroline of Brunswick (King George IV’s wife). The highly ornate decoration found on Queen’s Pattern demands that each piece is made with a thick gauge of silver and thus makes it one of the most prestigious flatware patterns.

There are several variants of the pattern, this canteen being in the most popular being with "anthemion heel". This term relates to the motif on the reverse side of the bowl and tines.

Condition

Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and the spoon bowls are unworn. The canteen has a mix of dates and therefore some pieces are blank whereas others bear a combination of engraved initials and crests.

Presentation

The service is housed in a modern wooden box by Arthur Price. The box probably dates from the time of the knives and soup spoons - circa 1971.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
